Track of the Week: Carrie Catherine, The Weather
I first heard this when Carrie did a girl-and-her-guitar night at McNally Robinson about a year ago when she was still performing as Carrie Horachek. That night I got completely sucked in by the melodic line, which managed to be awesomely bluesy, alluring, and threatening all at once. A few weeks ago Carrie did a show with a full band at the Broadway, and I was bowled over at how big her voice is; she's a tiny girl with a giant stage presence, and there's been some joyfully deft rearrangement of the track that just makes it soar. Then it was only when I took her new cd Venus Envy home did I fully realise what a witchy way with words the woman has. It's like the gift that keeps on giving.
Also, there's a kick-ass cover of Baby Love. Who'd have thought?

McNally Robinson has delicious desserts and sketchy service people.
I always enjoy getting bowled over by music you wouldn't expect to have a big reaction to.
